Safety Roadshow Indonesia

It was a pleasure to share lessons learned from a helicopter mid-air collision with more than 120 participants in Indonesia a few weeks ago.
Beyond the accident investigation itself, an extensive visibility study was conducted to support the root cause analysis.
 
By reconstructing the pilots’ viewpoints, we were able to better understand what could realistically be seen, what remained outside the field of view, and how these factors contributed to the human factors assessment of the event.
 
For the first time, together with Bruce Webb and Marcus Bauer, we brought a live demonstration of the VR-reconstructed accident scenario to the stage. Thanks to the support and openness of the authority in charge (Australian Transport Safety Bureau), participants were able to experience the reconstructed event and gain a deeper understanding of the circumstances that led to the collision. Improving aviation safety requires more than identifying what happened. It requires a deep understanding of why it happened and effective communication of those lessons to pilots, operators, investigators, and the wider aviation community.
