Video Footage Contains More Data Than You Think

Another aviation accident report has been published, including surveillance camera footage that captured the aircraft’s flight path prior to impact. The investigation successfully identified the accident sequence and reached its conclusions based on the available evidence.

Cases like this highlight an important point: there is often significantly more information hidden within video footage than is immediately visible.

Using the iwi® reconstruction methodology, even a single video source can be transformed into a detailed flight reconstruction, providing time-synchronized estimates of:

• Flight path with altitude and GPS-referenced positions
• Ground speed
• Yaw, pitch and roll attitude

Whether such additional information would have been required by the investigator in charge to determine the cause of this particular accident is not the issue. The investigation reached its conclusion based on the evidence considered necessary.
