Mid-Air Collision Near Sea World: The Importance of Human Factors in Aviation Safety

On January 2nd, 2023, a tragic mid-air collision occurred involving two Eurocopter EC130 helicopters near Sea World in Queensland, Australia.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has released its final investigation report, shedding light on the sequence of events and contributing factors. One of the key elements highlighted was the role of human factors—a critical component in understanding why such accident could occur.

To support this, iwiation could play a valuable role by reconstructing virtual perspectives of both pilots, offering immersive insight into what each pilot has seen in the moments leading up to the collision. The ATSB has created a video with detailed explanation of the findings from the accident investigation. The visibility study is presented starting at 6:30 in the video.

Such type of visual and situational reconstruction can be crucial and can be a powerful tool in human factor analysis, helping investigators to identify perception and situational awareness.

As more aviation accidents are increasingly linked to human decision-making and cognitive load, it's essential that the aviation shifts focus towards understanding the root causes behind these behaviors. Tools like iwiation’s virtual reconstruction capabilities can help pave the way for safer skies by turning tragic accidents into learning opportunities to improve aviation safety and drive systemic improvements.

We are proud to announce that we've received our first order from a U.S. state to equip a series of airports with iwiAI cameras.

This marks a major milestone in the deployment of intelligent visual technology for airport operations. Our AI-powered system enables automatic object detection, real-time position tracking, and precise callsign recognition of aircraft — all with minimal human oversight. These capabilities are crucial for enhancing safety, efficiency, and transparency in airfield activity.
We’re also excited to highlight our hardware partner iPro, whose robust camera systems serve as the foundation for this solution. Their high-performance imaging technology ensures reliable data capture in the most demanding airport environments. The cameras are equipped with integrated night vision support, designed for 24/7 surveillance.
Together with our partner 1200.aero, transponder data is merged with visual information, allowing tracking of take-off and landing events for fee management, providing a leading airport operations monitoring.
This collaboration demonstrates how modern AI, iwiai position reconstruction, airport operation data and proven hardware can come together, to transform airport monitoring into a smarter, more automated process — ready for the future of aviation.
