Clear communication of root causes is essential, immersive technologies like Virtual-Reality can support human factor analysis. Immersive communication helps improve aviation safety by remembering and preventing similar accidents in the future.

Today’s exchange demonstrated a strong level of interest and engagement among the participants. The open sharing of lessons learned from past accident root causes is a powerful step toward improving aviation safety for everyone.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has released its final investigation report, shedding light on the sequence of events and contributing factors. One of the key elements highlighted was the role of human factors—a critical component in understanding why such accident could occur.

To support this, iwiation could play a valuable role by reconstructing virtual perspectives of both pilots, offering immersive insight into what each pilot has seen in the moments leading up to the collision. The ATSB has created a video with detailed explanation of the findings from the accident investigation. The visibility study is presented starting at 6:30 in the video.

Such type of visual and situational reconstruction can be crucial and can be a powerful tool in human factor analysis, helping investigators to identify perception and situational awareness.

The event brought together students of the chair of Ergonomics to discuss cutting-edge methodologies for uncovering the causes of aviation incidents and how safety can be further improved.
Throughout the workshop, students delivered insightful presentations on a variety of topics related to flight data reconstruction. These included the integration of witness testimonies, the use of AI to recreate flight paths and the role of visual data such as video recordings or photographs. The students agreed that visual data is more reliable than witness data, however not always observations are digitally recorded.
The highlight of the event was a presentation by Dr. Marcus Bauer from the company iwiation, who shared invaluable experiences gathered through several published accident investigations. Dr. Bauer emphasized the importance of data collection that support the investigation and root cause analysis. He showcased the innovative techniques of iwi® methodology to enhance the accuracy and reliability of data reconstruction.
A critical discussion point during the workshop was the capability of immersive visualization for human factor analysis, which is increasingly recognized as a pivotal aspect of accident investigations. Human errors remain the leading root cause of accidents in the aerospace sector, and the ability to analyze behavioral and decision-making patterns through such methods is crucial for further improving aviation safety.

In 2023, the team transported 200 organs, and this year, they are aiming for 500. These challenging missions demand an unwavering commitment to safety, and we are dedicated to providing the support needed to ensure maximum aviation safety for future missions.

This event served as a global showcase for the latest aerospace innovations, bringing together industry leaders, manufacturers, and enthusiasts to witness firsthand the unveiling of state-of-the-art aircraft and technological marvels. We could present and explain our latest innovations around aviation safety supporting in flight accident reconstruction.
As we look back at 2023, it was a great exciting year, fostering existing and new collaborations, and inspiring the next wave of advancements that will support improving aviation safety.

We are excited to share the results of the latest development at Aero 2023 at Friedrichshafen. During the podiums discussion “Collision-avoidance” further details will be shared.
FLARM is the collision avoidance system and electronic conspicuity technology used by General Aviation and UAVs. Aircraft with a FLARM system issue visual and aural warnings when on a collision course with another aircraft. FLARM uses GPS and digital radio broadcasts to communicate with other aircraft. Many FLARM devices also incorporate an ADS‑B and transponder receiver. This enables aircraft that are not yet equipped with FLARM to be detected as well. FLARM is recommended by many aviation authorities and organizations. Over 60,000 manned aircraft, or more than 50% of General Aviation in Europe, already have a FLARM-system installed.
iwiation GmbH supports international authorities in accident investigation by providing flight-path-reconstruction based on video- & witness-information, 3D real-time-visualization and human factor analysis. The root cause analysis is used for the creation of lessons learned training.
